Who We Are

The first SOS Children’s Village was founded by Prof Dr. Hermann Gmeiner in 1949 in Imst, Austria. He was committed to helping Children in need–Children who had lost their homes, their security and their Families as a result of the Second World War. With the support of many donors and co-workers, our Organization has grown to help Children all over the world. SOS Children’s Villages operates in 134 countries worldwide. We work in the spirit of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

SOS Children’s Villages Sierra Leone was established in October, 1974. There are three SOS Children’s Villages in Sierra Leone in; 1. Freetown, 1.Bo and 1.Makeni. The SOS Children’s Villages Sierra Leone operates Family-Based Care Programs (FBC), Family Strengthening Programs (FSP), Technical College and Vocational Institute and Youth Programs, as well as Kindergertens (KDG), Primary and Secondary Schools known as the SOS Hermann Gmeiner International School (HGIS) and a Home for the Physically Challenged (HPC).

We take action for Children as an Independent Non-Governmental Social Development Organization. We respect varying religions and cultures, and we work in countries and communities where our mission can contribute to development.

Every child belongs to a family grows with love, respect and security.

We build families for children in need, we help them shape their own futures and we share in the development of their communities.

COURAGE: We Take Action

COMMITMENT: We Keep Our Promises

TRUST: We Believe in Each Other

ACCOUNTABILITY: We are Reliable Partners

With the SOS Children’s Village concept, our organization pioneered a family approach to the long term care of orphan and abandoned children. This concept is based on the following principles and social meanings;

Child at Risk: Ensuring their rights and dignity are respected

We care for children who are without parents and for children who cannot live with their families, and we support children who are at risk of losing their families.

The Mother

The SOS mother builds a close relationship with every child entrusted to her, and provides the security, love and stability that each child needs. As a child-care professional, she lives together with her children, guides their development, and runs her household independently. She recognizes and respects each child’s family background, cultural roots and religion.

Brothers and Sisters

Girls and boys of different ages live together as brothers and sisters, with natural brothers and sisters always staying within the same SOS family. These children and their SOS mother build emotional ties that last a lifetime.

The House

The house is the family’s home, with its own unique feeling, rhythm and routine. Under its roof, children enjoy a real sense of security and belonging. Children grow and learn together, sharing responsibilities and all the joys and sorrows of daily life.

The Village

SOS families live together, forming a supportive village environment where children enjoy a happy childhood. The families share experiences and offer one another a helping hand. They also live as integrated and contributing members of the local community. Through his or her family, village and community, each child learns to participate actively in society.

Childhood in Cultural Diversity

SOS Children’s Villages seeks to consolidate its relations with children and adults from various backgrounds. By advancing the diverse possibilities and potentials of being a child in various cultures, we paint a picture that is in stark contrast to the myopic vision of globalisation in the sense of uniformity.

Family: We respect the chlds biological root

SOS Children’s Villages is active worldwide, enabling children to grow up in the bosom of a family. We help the children to better understand their personal stories and to use them as resources.

Education: Childhood is the time of growing and learning

SOS Children’s Villages supports children through the various stages of development from childhood to adulthood. We devote special attention to questions of youth about education, finding a vocation and standing on their own two feet.

Moment of Happy Childhood;Childhood is a special time in anyone’s life

SOS Children’s Villages provides the framework for a childhood that pays attention to children’s needs. In view of the often traumatic backgrounds of many of the children in SOS Children’s Villages, enormous importance is attached to re-awakening their joy of living and to making the most of the child’s resources and environment.
