Motivating, enlightening, engaging and rejuvenating would describe the quiz competition held at SOS Hermann Gmeiner International School (HGIS) Freetown on the SOS International Day, June 23rd 2017.
In celebrating the SOS International Day here at SOS HGIS Freetown, a quiz competition was conducted by a committee of four teachers from the Jenior Secondary School; Mr. Augustine Bamie Anthony, Mr Jimmy Jajua, Mr Andrew C. Blake and Mr Tamba Ngaujah.This committee decided to celebrate this special day with such an academic activity after learning that social activities had characterized this celebration over the years.
The quiz competition was conducted among the three streams of Arts, Science and Commercial with six (6) quizzers from each stream ranging from SSS 1 (one) to SSS 3 (three). Cumulatively, eighteen (18) quizzers participated with an unexpected enthusiasm and excitement.
The competition was aimed at showcasing the knowlege students posses in terms of Programmes, Facilites and activities of SOS Children’s Villages International especially SOS Children’s Villages Sierra Leone through a healthy and highly motivated atmostphere.
Quiz competitions which seems to carry a lot of fright and pannic in the quizzers, turned out to be an excellent showcase of SOS Hermann Gmeiner International School rich educational heritage. The quiz competition had three rounds with results read out by the chief judge Madam Isata Massaquoi at the end of each round.
At the climax of the event, Chairman Barrister Jeremiah Saquee acknowledged the good work of the committee as he said “Teachers are the backbone of student’s development and play a very important role in deciding their bright future”. He gave opportunity to representative from each stream to say something about the entire conduct of the quiz.
Amie V. Yavana from the Arts stream expressed her satisfaction to the committee of teachers who put together the quiz competition. She said ” I am very happy to be part of this quiz which is happening for the first time since i entered this school from Kindergerten to Senior level, it really challenged us to search our achives and show how well we know the school we proudly say we are part of. Thanks to all our wonderful teachers we hope to have more of these quiz in furture celebrations”.
The final results were announced by the chief judge with the First position Commercial stream with 34 points, closely followed by the Science stream with 33 points and the Arts 3rd with 29 points.
Kia Saffa from the Commercial stream was announced best quizzer for thr . The 2nd and 3rd positions went to Tahir Hinga Songo and Isha Kamara respectively, both from the Science. Cash prizes were given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd individual best quizzers.
SOS International Day celebrated June 23 every year, is a worldwide remarkeable event throughout the SOS Children’s Villages federation in honour of Dr Hermann Gmeiner to honour his philanthropic work that has influnced the lives of thousands and thousands of vulnerable children and families in 134 (one hundrend and thirty four) countries in the world.
